Stopping
Smoking and other Addictions
There
are a
number of effective methods for tackling addictive behaviours. These
include:
1.
Motivational Interviewing: This is where the "pro's" and "con's" are
rebalanced so as to make quitting the addiction more desirable than
remaining with it.
2.
NLP Neuro
Linguistic Programming: This is a popular set of methods that include
powerful perception and behaviour change techniques.
3.
Hypnotherapy: a mainstay Behavioural change technique that can help you
feel more natural, motivated and happy about change.
4.
CBT
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: A useful therapy with a range of
different techniques for changing perception and behaviour.
5.
Psychological therapy and Counselling related methods: useful for
understanding
the reasons for addictions, and tackling any underlying reasons.
6.
Life
Coaching: Refocusing on positive new strategies, supportive behaviours
and creating reasons for change.
7.
Self Help:
there are plenty of things you can do to help yourself. Alone these may
not be enough for you to quit the addiction. Combined with other
elements on this list however they can really help you to succeed.
8.
Stress
management techniques and support: by keeping stress levels in check,
and having professional support, you get the right kind of emotional
environment to support positive change.
The
most
successful addiction therapy programmes combine elements of all of
these.
Smoking
Stop sessions
The
package we
use for stopping smoking consists of:
1.
An hour of
motivational interviewing and counselling.
2.
An hour of
Hypnotherapy and where appropriate NLP techniques. This is recorded
live and an MP3 / CD recording of your session email/posted to you.
3.
A self help
handout with CBT, Life Coaching and Self Help methods to help support
you.
A small minority of smokers need a booster session, usually if they are
under stress or if something unexpected happens.
Beware of therapists claiming to be able to offer accurate success rate
statistics. In practice private therapists can not monitor long term
success rates, partly because of data protection and confidentiality,
and partly because of the cost in doing so.
We do not believe in making false claims about success rates. We can
say however that approximately 50% of our smoking clients who come to
us
are referrals from other ex-clients who have successfully quit in the
past. The other approximate 50% are clients from advertising (such as
this website). Therefore a very large proportion of our clients are
coming via happy ex-clients who have stayed quit.
Also if you look at more general national studies, hypnotherapy and MI
(motivational interviewing) are known to be two of the most successful
methods when used alone, we of course combine them AND other methods
too.
Other
addictions
Other
addictions tend to me more complex. Most behavioural addictions like
sex addiction, Internet porn addiction, gambling etc tend to be more
deep routed and therefore take a quite substantial number of sessions
to address in any depth.
Usually such addictions require a combination of behavioural change
techniques (such as hypnotherapy or NLP) and combined techniques ( such
as CBT or life coaching).
Physical addictions such as drugs and alcohol addiction are more
problematic again, and although they too respond well to treatment with
behavioural and cognitive therapies, you should take care to get proper
medical supervision an attention. If you have an addiction to drugs
(legal or illegal) or alcohol, you should seek medical advice as a
matter of urgency. You can then choose whether to seek private support
from therapists such as our practice, or to seek a referral to a drugs
and alcohol counselling service. Such a referral may well be free of
charge and provide quite a range of support.
We often provide additional specialised support to clients who are also
seeing a drugs and alcohol counsellor, attending a support group and
having medical attention. Where other services are present we can still
contribute to the care plan, especially with self help training and
life coaching.
Addictions Therapy
and Coaching
Stuart has written
practitioner
training
courses in anger management coaching, stress management coaching, life
coaching (ASET Level 4 award) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (ASET
Level 5 Award).
It is important to
ensure
that the practitioner is experienced since addictions can become very
serious over time, and may result in serious medical conditions or
social problems. Therefore you should
choose a well experienced practitioner. Also remember to ensure you
have a check-up with your medical doctor!
In the first instance drop us an
email or
use the feedback form to contact us. We can then advise whether we feel
we can appropriately assist you.
