Herbalism
Edinburgh Glasgow
All our therapy services are available at our City Centre bases in
Edinburgh and Glasgow and we are
considering expanding into other cities shortly.
We have two fully qualified therapists on
staff, and a network of trusted colleagues around the UK we refer to.
We are complementary health practitioners,
not alternative health practitioners. This means that we work WITH the
medical profession. If you have an illness or injury, or if you are
going to embark on a new diet, fitness plan or if you have any
uninvestigated symptoms, you must consult your medical doctor.
Clinical or Holistic
Herbalism
Please note
that although Denise has completed courses referring to "medical
herbalism", we do not agree with the term, and therefore refer instead
to clinical or holistic herbalism. We feel that using the term "medical
herbalism" may deter clients from seeking medical advice from properly
qualified medical doctors, and this is inappropriate. Clients should
always seek medical advice from a medical doctor for illnesses,
injuries or disease and to gain a medical diagnosis. Herbalism is a
complementary form of therapy and not an alternative to conventional
medicine. The two should work together.
Herbalism is
useful because it enables the client to gain support for:
- Conditions
that have failed to respond to conventional medicine
- Conditions
that are not appropriate to treat with conventional medicine
- Conditions
that are concerned with quality of life or self improvement rather
that "treating" anything
The first
meeting with a herbalist will involve taking a full case history and
assessing your current situation. It is very important to take any
details of medical prescriptions and diagnosis along with you. This is
because your herbalist will need to know both. Some herbs may interfere
with medical drugs, or be inappropriate for clients with certain
medical conditions.
From the
meeting the herbalist will be able to put together a package of
assistance involving the use of appropriate herbs, diet and nutritional
issues, lifestyle issues and exercise issues. The herbalist may draw on
additional qualifications or experience in the fields of nutrition,
coaching, exercise coaching, auyrvedic medicine or chinese medicine.
Your
herbalist may ask you to visit your medical doctor for a check up if
for any reason your symptoms pose any concern. Your herbalist
can then normally continue to assist you alongside any medical
treatment. It is important to inform both herbalist and doctor of
ongoing assistance.
Clients
should always note that herbs are powerful treatments and should be
afforded the same respect as prescribed drugs. Indeed some herbs are
almost identical to prescribed drugs, for example white willow bark
contains an active ingredient identical to Aspirin.
How are herbs
used or applied?
Herbs can be
applied in a number of ways, the most common being consumed in pill,
tea, food additive or capsule format. Some herbalists produce herbs
themselves, others recommend herbs from a trusted local retailer.
Herbs
(depending on the herb) can also be used in ointments, salves, creams,
oils, baths, as essential oils, as inhaled oils / incense, as dried
bunches. The complete range of options is very wide indeed,
and partly depends on the philosophy of the herbalist.
What to look
for in a herbalist?
We recommend
avoiding any herbalist who seems to be trying to deter you from
maintaining medical supervision from a GP or other qualified doctor.
Herbalism should be complementary and not a substitute for traditional
medicine.
You should
also look for the additional background or qualifications that the
herbalist has.
-Do they have
a guiding philosophy of Auyrvedic, Chinese, Wiccan or other
herbal tradition?
- Do they
have qualification and training in related subjects such as diet and
nutrition?
- Do they
have any training in dealing with emotional or holistic issues that may
also be present?
You should
also look for evidence of adherence to NOS National Occupational
Standards, and of course recognisable qualifications.
