Personal Development Counselling Edinburgh and Glasgow

We are complementary health practitioners, not alternative health practitioners. This means that we work WITH the medical profession. If you have an illness or injury, or if you are going to embark on a new diet, fitness plan or if you have any uninvestigated symptoms, you must consult your medical doctor.

Counselling

Counselling has many forms and types. Indeed there is movement underway to regulate counselling as a profession within the next few years.

There are many different sorts of counselling. These include:

  • Personal Development Counselling: Using listening skills and appropriate counselling skills to assist a client in moving forward in their lives and tackling blocks and barriers to progress.
  • Personal emotional Counselling: Using listening skills and appropriate counselling skills to assist a client in moving forward in their lives and tackling emotional issues and problems.
  • Clinical counselling: Due for probable regulation: Using specific counselling skills and methods to address clinical conditions and mental health conditions directly.
  • Pastoral Counselling: Using listening skills and appropriate faith related counselling skills to assist a client in moving forward in their lives and tackling spiritual and faith issues.
  • Couples counselling: Using couples facilitation and group facilitation skills, listening skills, negotiation skills and other methods to enable better communication and understanding.
  • Addictions counselling: Using listening skills and appropriate counselling skills including motivational models to assist a client in moving forward in their lives and tackling addictions and dependencies.
  • Person Centred Counselling: A particular method of very much "listening skills" driven counselling.
  • Humanistic counselling: A method very much focused on achieving balance and progress in areas of life leading to an optimum state of well being.
  • Grief and Bereavement counselling. Stuart has specialised training and experience in this area.
  • Eating disorders counselling. Both practitioners have specialised knowledge in this area.

Qualifications and Standards

As with all therapies the practitioner should adhere to the National Occupational Standards (NOS Counselling) and have recognisable qualifications. These include ASET 3 and 4 awards.

If the expected regulation goes ahead, clients should note that many "counsellors" are likely to rebrand as coaches and therapists, since the regulation is likely to rigidly define counselling. This will mean that many types of assistance currently referred to as counselling will no longer be called that.

Stuart and Denise do not call themselves "counsellors" even though they have extensive counselling qualification. This is because it does not describe the wider range of skills and methods used.

Stuart: ASET Level 4 Integrated Therapeutic Counselling, ASET level 3 Grief and Bereavement Counselling, ASET Level 3 Psychotherapy, NVQ accreditation in appropriate competences. Multiple Diplomas.

Denise: ASET Level 4 Professional Therapeutic Counselling, Multiple Diplomas.

(We already adhere to the NOS Counselling 1995, and are currently examining the new 2007 revisions to ensure compliance with those)
