Welcome to Scotland's Premier Therapy and Holistic Personal Development Site

'Therapeutic care & Personal Development - The solution to your problems is in you'

BoatIf you are looking for professional expertise that combines real dedication to professional and therapeutic development, with real qualification and accreditation, then look no further!

We have City Centre bases in Edinburgh and Glasgow and we are considering expanding into other cities shortly.

We adhere to appropriate NOS National Occupational standards for the therapies that we provide, and both staff members are accredited to nationally recognised standards.

There is little in life that professional therapy and meaningful personal development will not either resolve or assist.

We have two fully qualified therapists on staff, and a network of trusted colleagues around the UK we refer to. We are holistic psychologists, psychoanalysts, life coaches and complementary therapists with our main bases in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

We are complementary health practitioners, not alternative health practitioners. This means that we work WITH the medical profession. If you have an illness or injury, or if you are going to embark on a new diet, fitness plan or if you have any uninvestigated symptoms, you must consult your medical doctor.  We do not use western medical models, and we do not "treat" people. We work with clients to assist them in attaining their goals.

Our Philosophy of practice: including why we are different from the proposed HPC model and redefinition of "counsellor" and "psychotherapist" HERE

(And some free fun & relaxing things for you to enjoy!)

Specialist areas include:

- Anger management  (HERE)

- Dyslexia counselling and coaching support (Dyslexia HERE )

- Bi polar / mood disorder management ( Bi Polar HERE )

- Depression and anxiety management (Depression HERE )

- Clinical Psychotherapy (pre HPC term) (HERE)

- Moving on from offending and related "trouble"

- NEAD (non-epileptic attack disorder) Management (HERE)

- Moving on from abuse  (HERE

We also provide general support and coaching therapy

Please note we are an ADULT service provider only.

Stuart and Denise are Life Coaches and Solution Focused Holistic Therapists who also have qualifications at levels 3 and 4 in Psychotherapy and Counselling. Having completed this professional training guides and informs practice, although implementation remains coaching, empowerment and solution focused. Stuart is essentially a psychoanalyst and holistic psychologist, Denise is essentially a complementary health therapist and holistic psychologist.

Naturally analytical and listening skills that also exist in psychotherapy and counselling are often used in coaching, personal training, NLP, hypnotherapy and generally in holistic and complementary therapies.

Solution focused therapy is results and outcome based, but is often guided by theory and thinking from subjects including Eastern Medicine, Philosophy, Theology, Social Policy, Health Education and Psychology. Stuart and Denise have completed a range of training courses and qualification courses in these topics and are committed to further University study of these topics in order to inform and develop professional practice. Stuart employs spontaneous style Qi Gong, Chi breathing, Zen Reiki, meditation, visualisation and mindfulness techniques from Buddhism in his practice. He also employs Taoist philosophy, Buddhist philosophy, interfaith philosophy and japanese complementary holistic styles in assisting his clients. Both therapists are Reiki attuned in various styles and use Reiki healing and philosophy where appropriate.

Alphabetically listed topic list HERE

Are you suffering from?

- Poorly controlled Stress or Anger

- Problems with addictions including smoking, drugs and gambling

- Lack of confidence or poor self esteem / self image

- Sleeplessness or agitation

- Lack of positive thinking for the future

- Lack of focus, motivation or structure

Full list of issues HERE

Would you like to?

- Combine your emotional and material needs
- Stop sabotaging yourself
- Live the life you deserve, rather than just "surviving"
- Reconcile any spiritual or religious issues

- Throw off domination by others in the past or present

With the combination of lifestyle coaching and professional therapy, your well being and personal development can be addressed from a far deeper level. This permits change that is not just symptomatic, but really lasts because underlying emotional, psychological and spiritual factors are address or balanced.

Usually Life Coaching, Hypnotherapy, Psychological therapy, NLP and related therapies suffer from the fact that the goal setting they depend on do not include enough deeper meaning. With the inclusion of the holistic side this is remedied. This avoids the situation of wonderful financial success, without happiness! No such problem with our assistance!

NEWS:

Dec 09

Stuart has now completed a month of intensive Naikan study and reflection.  it has been a valuable experience both in terms of personal / professional development, and in updating professional skills using this valuable eastern psychology method.

Early indications and reports are that psychologists who are HPC registered and working for the NHS are having to reduce the variety of therapeutic methods provided and focus on CBT based methods, favoured by the HPC.  Also IAPT workers are reporting being forced to complete excessive paperwork, statistical analysis and only provide CBT based approaches favoured by the government initiative. None of this is positive in terms of potential HPC regulation of counselling and psychotherapy and it increases the likelihood that holistic, eclectic and integrative therapists (those using a wide variety of tools and methods to help clients) will opt out of the HPC scheme and use alternative job titles.

Nov 09

Stuart is currently undertaking a Month of Naikan Self reflection under the leadership of the To Do Institute. This is a month of profound self analysis and reflection in the Naikan style and is part of Stuart's professional and personal supervision / development. During November Stuart will continue to see clients, but frequency will be reduced to allow for this commitment.

Congratulations to Prof Andrew Samuels who is a member of the Alliance against regulation in it's current proposed form, and who has just been elected as Chair of the UKCP on a clear platform of opposition to the current regulation process. UKCP have deliberately voted in opposition to the HPC regulation process. (we are not UKCP members).

Regulation news: In a survey, 84% of British Association for the Person-Centred Approach members who responded were against regulation by HPC. Thus yet another body is coming out as against the HPC model of regulation. (we are not members of this body)

Oct 09

Both therapists are now Associate members of the Institute of Professional Psychologists. This reflects the fact that both practitioners have existing extensive qualifications in psychology and related subject material, and are both expected to graduate in specific western psychology degrees within 5 years in addition to existing qualifications. This is on top of eastern psychology, psychotherapy, counselling, psychoanalysis and psychology modules / qualifications already held by the practitioners.

Two legal challenges have now been launched against the HPC, one under UK law and one in Europe. This is largely because the HPC have broken their own legal requirements in failing to identify the need for and suitability of state regulation of counselling and psychotherapy.

A major university study had now declared that the HPC process is not fit for purpose.

As part of our ongoing commitment to ongoing professional development, Stuart has joined the TO DO Institute and is now undergoing additional personal analysis and training in Naikan and Morita therapies.

Regulation news: the BACP have rejected the HPC proposals in their current form.  Although the staff at Scotlandtherapy are not BACP members we welcome this move by one of the "big two" bodies.

Mindfulness Reiki Do and Pagan Elemental Reiki Attunements also now available HERE

During October the alliance against Statutory regulation of counselling and psychotherapy in it's present state has launched both a hard copy book and e-copy detailing arguments and responses against the HPC process.

Tao Reiki Do attunement now available for a modest fee. Here

Free Reiki attunements now available in Usai and Fusion Reiki via distance chi ball. Free manuals provided. Available to SAC health course students, SHTC members and Church of Seven Planes members (it if free to be ordained into the multi-faith church of seven planes). HERE

During September communication between Stuart and the HPC has drawn comments from the HPC that indicate the HPC will only enforce "broad based" standards so as to enable diversity of practice. This is completely contradicted by the draft standards the HPC have already published, which use only a medical model reductionistic "patient, treatment, therapist" model. In response to a question from Stuart relayed by a colleague, the head of the HPC Marc Seale indicated that the HPC will investigate complaints about unregulated therapies used by HPC regulated therapists. In other words a registered HPC counsellor could have a complaint made about Reiki work, and the HPC would attempt to investigate despite no standards, knowledge or expertise in that area. Seale also indicated that the HPC would call in "experts" as required, and then afterwards "wave goodbye". He did not indicate who the experts would be, who would choose them, what measures would be employed to ensure therapy modal compatibility or how the HPC -  a body of civil servants, could be confident about understanding "expert" credentials or comments!

In positive news - Stuart has attained Zen Reiki master level attunement and training including comprehensive pre attunement meditation. This is part of an ongoing dedication to bringing more philosophy into practice, where appropriate.  Buddhist 5 Dhyanna Buddha attunement is planned by the end of September.

It has now become clear that the HPC draft Standards for proposed psychotherapy and counselling are based on a medical model where the psychotherapist "treats" the "patient" using easy to assess methods only. This is radically different to the psychoanalysis, complementary health and holistic psychology methods employed by Scotlandtherapy.co.uk . We acknowledge that in some medical settings this model may be appropriate, but in private complementary health practice this model simply is not fit for purpose. We will continue to offer a broad range of methods and if this means that we do not fit the description of "psychotherapist" that the HPC has created, then we will need to use more accurate job titles.

Aug 09

Currently the UK Government has tasked the HPC to regulate counsellors and psychotherapists.  There is uncertainty as to whether this may restrict the service registered counsellors and psychotherapists can offer clients. If this regulation does limit the models of therapy and services we can offer our clients then we will reject the new regulation and cease the use of the protected titles. In this event it will not be our service that changes, it will be the definition of "counsellor" and "psychotherapist", which will no longer accurately describe the service we offer. Until that time Denise remains a CCC registered counsellor, and Stuart remains a NACHP registered Counsellor and clinical Psychotherapist as well as a ISPC registered counsellor.

More information on the limits of this UK Government initiative HERE .  and HERE

Information on why the HPC may be inappropriate as the body to regulate counselling can be found HERE

July 09

It has also become apparent that the HPC feel able to claim ownership of certain techniques as belonging to just one regulated therapy, rather than being methods that exist in multiple models of therapy (e.g. hypnotherapy, NLP, Life Coaching, eclectic therapy, holistic therapy). Therefore we catagorically state that although both practitioners hold multiple counselling and psychotherapy qualifications, all the methods we use exist as known methods in models of therapy outside of counselling and psychotherapy.

Alongside the developments with the HPC is a new larger suite of NOS National Occupational Standards for "psychological therapies" being developed by Skillsforhealth. Although we generally support NOS, these standards are highly biased towards "treatment" models that do not fit well in complementary health settings. We will adhere to Hypnotherapy NOS and Healing NOS, and will consider whether the new NOS are appropriate for our practice in due course.

A limited number of clients will now we accepted in Edinburgh paying using the Edinburgh LETS alternative trading scheme. This will be a community service provided by the practitioners in order to allow persons on very low income to access therapy services. Numbers will be restricted since although LETS payment will be accepted we at Scotlandtherapy will still have to pay our costs in pounds sterling and therefore will have to cap the number of clients accepted on this scheme.
